26. June 2020.
To work in Ireland, doctors must obtain a work permit known as the IMC license. Below, we’ll provide a detailed guide on how to register as a doctor in Ireland and obtain this license, including step-by-step instructions for registering with the Irish Medical Council (IMC).
After reviewing this guide, all that’s left for you to do is gather the required documents and take the first step toward moving to the land of lush greenery, St. Patrick, and Guinness.

How to Register as a Doctor in Ireland
Registration with the IMC is now entirely online, completed via the Irish Medical Council’s dedicated portal for doctors.
The process can be divided into two main parts:
Preparing the required documentation
Submitting your application via the portal
Let’s start with the first step and explore the basic documents you’ll need to obtain and prepare in advance.

Preparing the Required Documentation
The documentation required for obtaining the IMC license depends on where you completed your medical education and where your degree was issued.
There is also universal documentation, such as a certified copy of your passport, which you must submit. More details are provided below.
1) If You Studied in Croatia
The IMC recognizes medical degrees from all medical faculties in Croatia.
You will also need to obtain two documents from the Croatian Medical Chamber:
Certificate of Conformity – To confirm that your education complies with the EU Directive of 2005.
Certificate of Good Standing – To confirm whether you are or have been subject to disciplinary proceedings and temporary or permanent license suspensions.
Both documents must be translated into English and sent directly from the Croatian Medical Chamber to the Irish Medical Council, clearly referencing your future license number.
2) If You Studied in Other EU/EEA Countries
If you completed your education in another EU or EEA country, you can check the list of recognized degrees here.
As with Croatia, doctors from EU/EEA countries must obtain:
Certificate of Conformity
Certificate of Good Standing
These documents must also be translated into English and sent directly by the national medical chamber to the Irish Medical Council, referencing your future license number.
3) If You Studied Outside the EU/EEA
If your education was completed outside the EU or EEA, your degree must be verified through EPIC (Electronic Portfolio of International Credentials).
Here’s how to get it verified:
1. Create an EPIC account: You will need to provide personal details, information about your medical education and licensing history, a photo, and a scanned copy of your passport photo page.
2. Confirm your identity: Use the NotaryCam service to verify your identity digitally. You’ll need a computer with a webcam or a smartphone to do so.
3. Upload documentation: Submit copies of your degree and work license. Non-English documents must be translated in accordance with the ECFMG guidelines.
4. EPIC review: EPIC will assess your documentation for validity and compatibility with Irish educational standards.
5. Receive further instructions: If additional steps are required, EPIC will notify you.
The next step is submitting your application. To do so, open your account dashboard and follow this procedure:
1. Click on the “Outstanding Tasks” notification.
2. Select “Start Application.”
3. Complete the questionnaire, providing details about your education, work experience, and any other relevant information.
4. Once you complete the questionnaire, you will see a list of documents that must be submitted with your application. While you can review this list in advance here, we strongly recommend saving (or printing) the list generated by the application system, as it will be tailored to your specific situation and the eligibility category you belong to.
5. Follow the instructions for paying the application fee. Your application will only be processed after the payment is successfully completed. The fee amount depends on the category you are applying for, and you can find the complete list of fees here.

4. Submit the Required Documents
Finally, you will need to submit the required documentation, which may include:
✓ A certified copy of a valid passport, notarized by a public notary
✓ The original Certificate of Good Standing or Current Professional Status, issued within the last 3 months, which must be sent directly to the Irish Medical Council by every registration authority where you have been registered in the past five years
✓ An EPIC report confirming that you have sent your basic medical qualification to the council through EPIC
✓ An EPIC report confirming that you have sent your internship certificate to the council through EPIC
✓ Proof of communication skills sufficient for practicing medicine
✓ Evidence of appropriate professional indemnity insurance (if applicable)
We once again remind you that the required documentation depends on the eligibility group to which you belong. Therefore, be sure to review the documentation needed for your specific situation or eligibility criteria, or simply follow the list generated by the application system.
To successfully certify your documents, visit an official public notary and ensure that the document includes the date of certification, the official’s signature, and a seal. Otherwise, the council has the right to reject your documentation, which would, of course, delay the process further.
Although documentation was previously sent by mail, you can now simply scan and upload it electronically to your profile to speed up the licensing process.

Certificate of Good Standing: A Special Case
Please note that the Certificate of Good Standing must be obtained from the national medical chamber and sent by the chamber directly to the Irish Medical Council, referencing your future license number.
This certificate must be translated into English.
Once you receive this certificate, it must be certified and translated (in the same manner as the other documentation). However, you do not send it yourself; instead, you return it to your national medical chamber, which forwards it officially to the Irish Medical Council.
What Happens After the Application Is Submitted?
After successfully submitting your application, you should receive an email confirmation. After that, all that remains is to wait for the Irish Medical Council to review and approve your application, which you will also be notified about via email.
In the meantime, you can monitor the status of your application through the portal (click on “Activity Log” in the menu).
