"To Upgrade -or- not to Upgrade, there is no Question"

"Own the very best!"

Stock high-end audio gear still leaves a lot to be desired.
Even ultra high end models simply fail to come close sonically to the same model which has been upgraded.

Reimyo 777 CD player upgrade

Hello all,
A rumor is going around about my Reimyo 777 CD player being modified by David. I guess when you're living in a fishbowl you can't keep anything a secret.

Okay, David Schulte did do the mod and I am sitting here in sheer musical delight. So much in fact I find this difficult to write as the music's playing in the background. Results? Yeah, they're pretty much amazing right out of the operating room (I'm told 300-hours is the magic point). Not that the player wasn't amazing before, or that the upgrade is that amazing at the 24-hour mark, but what's more astounding is that ANY improvement would be this apparent so soon -- That my friends is what I find amazing considering how good the player performed stock.

So why mod in the first place? Good question. I've had a number of components modified over the years and have never had what might be considered a "regret" (knock wood). Most guys that perform mods are confident in their work. I will admit that I didn't want to do this mod. One of my guys at the magazine had his amplifier modified by David Schulte and wrote me about the level of improvements. You need to make a leap of faith. Once you do that...then you're DONE!

I spoke with David on numerous occasions and mentioned that perhaps one day I would give him a piece from my rig that wasn't modified and we'd see what he could do. Two components that had not had a mod was the new Boz line of amplifiers from Tact and the Reimyo. Travel plans had me away from home and this was perfect timing for David, so I took the plunge. I sent both my Reimyo and Boz amplifiers. Upon my return, there was my Reimyo and Boz amps awaiting me on my porch. Realistically, I can't say what's doing what between the Reimyo and the Boz but I'll say I got another level due to the improvements to: openness, dynamics, sense of ease, palpability, image and focus, and most importantly RESOLUTION.

Case in point: I recently purchased the big DALI Megaline loudspeakers and as good as they are (I absolutely love them) the Ascendo System M still had one edge over them in the most important part of the musical spectrum -- the midrange. And as much as I tussled with trying to get the Megalines to match the Ascendo I simply could not. The Megalines did the other extremes at a level that is quite impressive if not extraordinary. That said, with the mod, I've now got as good if not better midrange than with my Ascendos.
